Ionic Compounds are made up of giant structures. In these structures strong electrostatic forces hold the ions together. So this means

  • Solid at room temperature

You need loads of energy to overcome the strong ionic bonds because they have high melting/boiling points.

When melted...

  • Ions free to move

This then allows the compound to carry an electrical current.
