Ionic bonding

  • Only applies when a metal and a non metal are bonding
  • Electrons are gained/lost depending on configuration
    • Atoms with 4 electrons or less in the outer shell will lose electrons
    • Atoms with more than 4 electrons in the outer shell will gain electrons
  • Ionic bonding is defined as strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
  • Ionic compounds tend
