Attachment:

An attachment is a close two-way emotional bond between two individuals in which each individual sees the other an an essential for their own emotional security.

Reciprocity - 

  • A description of how two people interact. Mother-infant interactions is reciprocal in the way that both infant and mother respond to eachothers signals and evokes a response from the other.
  • from around 3 months this interaction type will increase and involve close attention to eachothers verbal signals and facial expressions. (Feldman and Eidelman)

Interactional synchrony -

  • Mother and infant reflect both the actions and emotions of the other and do this in a synchronised way.

Procedure-

  • Meltzoff and Moore. Observed in infants as young as two weeks old. An adult displayed one of three facial expressions or one of three gestures.
  • The child's response was filmed and identified by independent observers. 

Findings -

  • An associations was found between the expression or gesture the adult had displayed and actions of the babies.
