·       Population explosion

o   Money

·       Growing addiction and purchase of opium after the Opium Wars 1839-42

o   Caused social and economic problems (inflation as opium became new currency)

·       Mounting corruption among officials

o   Eg. Emperor’s favourite He Shen who took massive bribes

·       Government wasn’t getting enough taxes.
