Interference happens when two waves overlap.

Constructive Interference:

Reinforcement of waves - when they arrive in phase they reinforce each other to give a wave of greater amplitude.

Destructive Interference:

Cancelation of waves - when they arrive out of phase they cancel out

Sources of light need to be coherent. This means they emit light of the same frequency/colour (monochromatic) same amlitude, in phase.
