Railways

  • 1880s: State began to buy up railway companies and construct new long distance railways
  • 1890s: 60% of whole railway system was state owned rose to 66% in 1905
  • 1881-85: 632km build yearly,1891-95: 1292km build yearly
  • 1905: Had 59,616km of railway that showed major engineering feat accomplished
  • Helped open Russia's interior allowing exploitation of raw materials
  • Railway reinforced export drive and stimulated development of iron and coal industries
  • Transport costs fell causing goods prices to fall
  • Government then gained revenue from charges and passenger fares
  • River and sea navigation improved, there was an increase in steamships
