Individual Differences- The Behavioural Approach

HideShow resource information

The Behavioural Model:
This model concentrates on observable behaviour and suggests that we learn to be abnormal. Behaviour is learnt in 2 ways:

  • Classical Conditioning- learning through association. If a child gets bitten by a dog and it causes pain the child may associate dogs with pain and develop a phobia of dogs.
  • Operant Conditioning- learning through the consequences of behaviour. If a behaviour is rewarded then it will be maintained. If punished it will stop. If people who are ridiculed for being fat they may stop eating and develop an eating disorder.
