Raids on other tribes

  • Fighting men were very important to a tribe due to their hunting of the buffalo.
  • Raids only ever went ahead if they thought it would work, and raiders escaped quickly if there was too much opposition.
  • Only selected brotherhoods went on raids, which would reduce losses if the raid failed.
  • Coup means success. Counting was a type of fighting in which a warrior woukd attempt to hit/touch an opponent rather than kill and escape without being injured or killed. It demanded a lot of skill and bravery and gained the warrior lots of respect in success.
