Impacts of urbanisation

  • Overcrowding can occur where too many people live in one area, leading to a shortage of houses and jobs.
  • Increased traffic, pollution and waste can all occur as a result of too many people living in one area
  • In LICs, squatter settlements can be erected (badly built, illegal settlements found in and around the city). An example is in Mumbai, India
  • Squatter settlements are overcrowded, so disease spreads quickly
  • The population in rural areas falls due to rural-urban migration.
  • The squatter settlements have no drains, therefore flooding is more common
  • Fewer taxes are collected in rural areas to pay
