The first world war was a catastrophe for germany. the beginning of the war in 1914 ws welcomed by a broad spectrum of public and political opinion in the country. However, the war effort was managed by a chaotic bureaucratic system that HIGHLIGHTED rather than covered up germanys shortcomings insofar as a lack of raw materials and labour was concerned. Huge casualties sapped morale, as did growing hunger on the home front. strikes and an ever more restless REICHSTAG challenges the military leadership of Generals  hindenburg & ledendorff. the last two years of war were marked by growing political polarisation. by 1918 the nation was exhausted by war and faced defeat.
