Phagocytes able to attack and destroy any foreign cell
--> response = non-specific
HOWEVER
immune system also includes other types of cell that respond to specific antigens
> lymphocytes
- white blood cells, lrg nucleus
- 2 types, look identical - different by how they work
- T lymphocytes (Tcells) - defence mechanism called Cellular response
- B lymphocytes (B cells) - humoral response
- both lrg no. of varieties
- formed very early life
- each cell = specific receptors on cell-surface membrane
- specific receptor bind to specific antigen
T lymphocytes and cellular response
Neutrophils - engulf bacteria - use lots of energy - diie shortly after
Macrophages - long lived cells
- engulfs pathogen
- breaks it apart
- places some of pathogens antibodies on own cell surface membrane
- encountered by T lymphocytes
- displaying of antigens by macrophage = antigen-presenting cell APC
