Immune response

?

Phagocytes able to attack and destroy any foreign cell

--> response = non-specific

HOWEVER

immune system also includes other types of cell that respond to specific antigens

> lymphocytes

  • white blood cells, lrg nucleus
  • 2 types, look identical - different by how they work
  • T lymphocytes (Tcells) - defence mechanism called Cellular response
  • B lymphocytes (B cells) - humoral response
  • both lrg no. of varieties
  • formed very early life
  • each cell = specific receptors on cell-surface membrane
  • specific receptor bind to specific antigen

T lymphocytes and cellular response

Neutrophils - engulf bacteria - use lots of energy - diie shortly after

Macrophages - long lived cells

  • engulfs pathogen
  • breaks it apart
  • places some of pathogens antibodies on own cell surface membrane
  • encountered by T lymphocytes
  • displaying of antigens by macrophage = antigen-presenting cell APC
