Identity

The term identity refers to who we are as a person and how we, and others, see ourselves. It can focus around our characteristics, for example our social class, gender, ethnicity, nationality or sexuality.

Personal identity

Our personal identity is who we officially are, the way the government sees us. This is proved through passports, birth certificates, national insurance number or driving licenses

Social identity

Our social identity is the way we see ourselves in comparison to others and who we are in relation to other people or groups.

It can be split into three categories:

• Label – e.g. girl

• Categorise – e.g. popular girl

• Compare – e.g. Popular girls…
