MAINFRAMES – are the biggest

·         Powerful – they can perform hundreds of instructions per second (MIPS)

·         Large – generate a lot of heat which means they need big air conditioned rooms

·         Expensive - £3-4 million

·         Used to run large computer systems and networks in banks, insurance companies
