Hydrogen gas is produced when a meta reacts with an acid.

metal + acid ---> salt + hydrogen

This is a redox reaction.  The name of the salt formed depends on both the metal and acid.  Hydrochloric acid forms chloride salts and sulphuric acid forms sulphate salts.

Combustion of Hydrogen

The test for hydrogen gas is a lit splint.  If hydrogen is present a 'squeaky pop' will be produced.  The reaction taking place is the combustion of hydrogen.

  • Hydrogen + oxygen ----> water
