Relations with the Papacy

H had good relations with the papacy until their disagreement over the annulment of the King's marriage to Cath of A.

A.Pollard (wrote in 1929) agrued that W, as cardinal and papal legate, actually conducted FRel in the interests of the Pope.- Pollard also argued that W was ambitious and aspired to become Pope himself.
