- The act is based on the commitment to individual rights and freedom from the state acting against groups or individuals in an illegal manner.
- It came into force in October 2000, and it is now a part of UK law.
- Any legal proceedings in the UK must take account of the Human Rights Act (HRA).
- The act contains sixteen rights in all. And it is clear that discrimination must not take place.

There are 4 absolute rights. This means that there must be no compromise or change, and they must not be broken under any circumstances.
