How united was Italy after 1865?

- although the 'Kingdom of Italy' was proclaimed in 1861, technically Italy wasn't geographically united
- Venice and Rome was still to be acquired as Venice was in Austria's hand and French troops were occupying Rome
- however, Garibaldi made two unsuccessful attempts at capturing Rome once in 1862 and again in 1867
- Italy didn't fully become unified until 1870 following the Franco-Prussian war
- there wasn't any good leadership when Cavour died, all of his successors were lacking charisma…
