Obstacle 1 - The South:

  • The south were an extremely backward country both socially and econmically
  • a law was introduced that made compulsory education for all children for at least 2 years
  • the vast majority of the adult population were illiterate
  • after a while, people were forced to flee to the hills and forests
  • people also joined Brigandage, (bandits) that consisted of soldiers loyal to Neapolitan Bourbon monarchy, those left behind from Garibaldi's army & local peasants
