How to measure earthquakes

·         In terms of relative size, earthquakes can be compared most directly using the Richter scale, which provides a calibrated measure of the amount of energy released in an earthquake event. The scale is based on a number of parameters of an earthquake event, including the area of fault rupture and the amount of fault movement involved.
