How did Hitler become Chancellor in 1933?

After the elections in July 1932, the Nazi’s were the largest single party. Hitler demanded the post of Chancellor from Hindenburg who refused (initially).

The chancellor at the time was Franz Von Papen.

Hindenburg continued to use his emergency powers to pass laws hopefully, solving the problem of unemployment.

However, Von Papen was soon to have no support in the Reichstag. Consequently, another election was called in November 1932.

The Nazis came out as the largest party although their vote fell.

Hitler regarded this as a disaster as he had lost 38 seats…
