How writers use different techniques to create characters

King Lear

Flattery: ‘Which of you shall we say doth love us most?’ – shows how he needs the reassurance of others in order to feel important. The use of the determiner ‘most’ shows Lear’s insecurities.

Lear descends into madness: ‘child-changed father’ is how he is described by his daughter. The use of the pre-modifying adjective ‘child-changed’ creates a juxtaposition with the pronoun ‘father’. Shows how he has reverted back to a child.

Values appearance over reality: This means that he likes the idea od being king more than he wants the obligations that come along with it, 'To shake all cares and business from our age', the verb 'shake' shows how he feels that being king is a burden on his life. The reason for wanting to get rid of the responsibility is due to his age, he belives that old 'age' means that he isn't suitable to be king.
