The NHS

  • hospitals were allowed to beocme self governing trusts in charge of own budgets
  • services were expected to compete to become more cost efficient
  • GPs became fund holders with their own budgets to manage
  • supporters of policy= more financial discipline into the NHS
  • critics of policy= first stage of privatisation that would make cost effiency more important that patient care

Schools

  • O Levels/CSEs replaced in 1986 by GCSEs in rder to make UK more competitive in internation education
  • introduced national curriuclum with regular national testing in 1988
  • state schools were given option to control own budgets
