Social Policies of MT's government
The NHS
- hospitals were allowed to beocme self governing trusts in charge of own budgets
- services were expected to compete to become more cost efficient
- GPs became fund holders with their own budgets to manage
- supporters of policy= more financial discipline into the NHS
- critics of policy= first stage of privatisation that would make cost effiency more important that patient care
Schools
- O Levels/CSEs replaced in 1986 by GCSEs in rder to make UK more competitive in internation education
- introduced national curriuclum with regular national testing in 1988
- state schools were given option to control own budgets
