There are 3 parts:
- Precipitation
- Temperature
- Antecedent moisture
Type of precipitation
Precipitation that falls as snow remains on grounds until it melts - can temporarily reduce discharge (hydrograph curve becomes less high - peak flow is lower & lag time increases)
Rapid melting means a rapid increase in discharge which can result in a short lag time & high peak flow as seen with a steep rising limb
Precipitation intensity
Heavy precipitation = increase in discharge & high peak discharge because there will be more water in drainage basin
