How successfully did MT deal with industrial relations?
MT's Aims
- she believed that-
- that industrial relations laws had been used to rpotect over manning/restrictive practices
- union power made UK firms uncompetitive
- jobs would become available when Uk ajusted to market conditions
MT's Legislation
- Employment Act of 1980= ooutlawed secondary picketing and increased rights of workers that refused to join TUs
- Employment Act 1982= restricted sympathy strikes and allowed closed shop only if ballot showed +85% support
- Trade Union Act 1984= unions had to hold a secret ballot before launching action
- Number of days lost to strike dropped
- workers less likely to strike with high unemployment as knew they could be replaced
