Homer's Odyssey Book 12: Scylla and Charybdis

  • Odysseus and his men arrive in Aeaea, after dawn arrives they bury Elpenor with his oar
  • Circe gives Odysseus' crew meat, bread,and wine, she praises Odysseusfor returning from the underworld, she persuades them to stay for the day, the men go to sleep while Circe tells Odysseus how to continue
  • She tells him that when passing the sirens he should either put beeswax in his ears or get his men to bind him to the mast, he then has two options, the wandering rocks which only the Argo has passed through, or Scylla and Charybdis. Circe reprimands him when he suggests fighting Scylla and tells him to call on Scylla's mother Cratais for help, she tells him to ensure his crew don't touch Hyperion's cattle
  • Circe sends Odysseus' crew a favourable wind as they leave the next morning, he explains the prophecies to his men, as they approach the sirens he plugs the men's ears with wax and they bind him to the mast, Odysseus
