The intimidation used by the ** was an important factor in the rise to power of the Nazi party. They were an elite guard of fanatics that grew to a personal army. In charge of concentration camps and used as an execution squad they were among the most feared under the Nazi reign. A clear example of their ruthless nature could be seen during 'the night of the long knives' when they mercilessly slaughtered the SA. Their coercion, alongside that of other paramilitary groups undoubtedly scared many into compliance. The Nazi use of a 'police state' helped to enforce their rule amd fear is clearly a major contributor to their success. 

The Reichstag Fire Decree was also incredibly important and gave far more opportunity for control than the ** alone. This gave the ** the power to place people in the concentration camps as enemies of the state as well as complete
