1845 - Horace Wells used nitrous oxide as an anaesthetic 

1846 - William Morton, an American dentist, used ether when removing teeth. It was also used for operations such as removing tumours.

1847 - James Simpson experimented with chloroform.

1848 - Hannah Greener was the first patient to die from chloroform poisoning after an operation on her toe.

1853 - Queen Victoria was given chloroform for the birth of her son.
