History - Feminine Gospels

History

explores the lack of a female voice in history - most historical events are recorded by men, they often only record when they have been successful. History is being personified through the old woman.

Structure:

Techniques/Language/Themes:

Religious imagery "She'd seen them ease him down / from the Cross, his mother gasping / for breath," = cruicification of Christ, the religious references create a visual imagery for all, and women are not often mentioned in the Bible, but this old woman who is "history" clearly shows that they are affected too.

"witnessed the wars...the dictator" = history is men causing wars & violence, men fought in "the wars" and the "dictator" is alluding to Hitler.
