Ludwig Erhard - replaced Adenauer

Inflation was at 4% and Erhard was faced to cut his spending plans and raise interests rates, which meant that everyone might have to work an extra hour a week, which was heavily voiced against by workers and trade unions. Because of this his party popularity fell.

Willy Brandt - won and came into office with a narrow majority 251 -249 in the Bundestag.

Brought high hopes about political and social reform. Reformed criminal law and lowered the voting age to 18, which encouraged young voters to voice their opinion in terms of what they wanted to happen in terms of future politics. Extended education provision, provided more jobs and homes, especially to those of poorer backgrounds. However, the reforms placed down by Brandt demanded more government spending, which worsened Germany's already growing inflation. Brandt's way of going about economic politics provoked internal opposition with the Left / Right whom had disagreements on how Germany's economic developments should progress and how the government should be spending their money.
