Roman Citizenship: Qualification

Civitas or citizenship in Ancient Rome can be divided into four classes:

  • Male Citizen
  • Roman Women
  • Client State Citizens
  • Freedmen

Male citizens could gain citizenship as the legitimate child of a Roman citizen, male children gained male citizen rights, female citizens female rights. On some occasions individuals were granted citizenship rights. Citizenship could be removed from an individual.
