Higher classical studies

The strategoi were military commanders who also had the power to implement the policies decided by the Council and the Assembly. They were responsible for commanding armies and navies in battle. Each strategos (singular) tended to come from the richest families in Athens, though any citizen could put themselves up for election (and did sometimes get elected)
