The Archons and Magistrates
During the Archaic Period three archons had been the most important officials. The word archon meant ‘ruler’ (as in monarch).
The archons were the equivalent of the Roman magistrates, people who were in charge of various aspects of running the city.
As democracy increased the power of some of the archons decreased.
