Narrative: Untold story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson - African-American women who worked in NASA, known as human computers. They were partly behind the launch of John Glenn into orbit in 1962, he personally asked for Katherine to check the numbers before he took off. THIS TURNED AROUND THE SPACE RACE!! Counters the traditional American story of John Glenn and the focus on a white male narrative, revealing the 'hidden figures' behind this achievement. So minority groups are moved from marginalisation to celebration, so the film revises previous representations of the Space Race that have ignored the significant role of A-A females.

Inspired by Margot Lee Shetterly's novel, providing the film with a built in audience. The book was rebranded after the release of HF, the cover became the main promotional poster for HF.

PG certificate. Serious themes about race, gender and discrimination in the USA therefore the overwhelming audience reaction to these themes is promising as it suggests they are resposive to these serious themes. Genre - historical biography with an element of melodrama. By the end of the film a truce has been drawn between the initially hostile white employees and the African-Americans.

Specific Themes:

  • Civil Rights - referenced by the Coloured Bathroom and in the lyrics of Pharell Williams
  • 1960's…
