Henry's VII's actions to reduce the power of the nobility

?

How effective was Henry in reducing the power of the Nobility?

Henry needs the nobility for help and advice, in order to rule most effectively. They allow him to maintain enforcement of law and order across the country effectively, so that the King can keep himself and his governance centralised.

Neverthless, throughout WoR, the nobility have been known to raise private armies and go against the King himself. By being given too much power, they may pose threats or ignore the enforcements of law in some areas.

In order to tackle this situation Henry:

  • Limited the number of his nobility which increased the value, prestige and level of responsibility attached to being positioned as a noble member. He reduced peerage from 50 to 35, reduction of 30%.

Henry's actions towards the Nobility: (dual strategy, carrot vs stick)

Evidance of 'carrot'/rewards:

  • He abandons grants of land as a reward to Nobles. It increased crown debts greatly and created overly-powerful Nobles. By abandoning it, he secures his power…
