Unrest in the early years:
- His weak claim to the throne - his mother's Beaufort line was only recently legitimised under Richard II.
- He gained the throne by killing Richard III - people didn't actively support him they just disliked Richard.
- He had spent previous 14 years in exile in France, since Tewkesbury
Henry's attempts to secure power:
- Changes the date of the Battle of Bosworth to claim he had traitors against him
- Arranged his coronation (Oct 30th) before parliament so it didn't appear a result of parlimentary decision
- Marrys Elizabeth of York under papal dispensation, so he doesn't owe his crowns to her
- The country wanted peace, not war at this time, and people liked that he didn't depend on a large noble family
