Henry married his brother Arthur's widow, Catherine of Aragon, and was anxious to conclude the marriage as quickly as possible due to her mistreatment. Henry's councillors believed that marriage would deflect him from political matters and enable them to conduct councillor business. They married on 11 June 1509.
