Heart Rhythm
The Basic Rhythm of the heart is maintained by a wave fof electrical excitation:
- Wave of excitation starts at the Sino-Atrial Node (SAN)
- This causes the atria to contract and a heartbeat is initiated
- There is a layer of non-conducting tissue that prevents gthe excitation passing directly to the ventricles
- Electrical activity from the SAN is picked up by the Atri-Ventricular Node (AVN).
- The AVN imposes a slight delay before it stimulates the Bundle of His.
- The Bundle of His is a bundle of collecting tissue that is made up of Purkyne Fibres, these go through the septum between the ventricles
- Bundle of His separates into two branches as it conducts the wave of excitation to the Apex of the heart.
- At the Apex the Purkyne Fibres spread out through the walls of the heart.
- The excitation spreads which triggers the contraction of the ventricles.
- The contraction starts at…
