Hardness of water

What makes water hard?

  • Dissolved magnesium and calcium compounds make water hard. These normally come from limestone and chalk rock


  • Gypsum rocks (mainly calcuim sulfate) also makes water hard. When a river flows over gypsum rock, calcium sulfate dissolves in the water

There are two types of hard water:

  • Water that has flowed over
