What makes water hard?
- Dissolved magnesium and calcium compounds make water hard. These normally come from limestone and chalk rock
- Gypsum rocks (mainly calcuim sulfate) also makes water hard. When a river flows over gypsum rock, calcium sulfate dissolves in the water
