Solubility
- Halogenoalkanes are very slightly soluble in water
- For them to disolve in water you have to break attractions between the molcules and break the H bonds between water molecules, both these cost energy
Boiling point
- Some boiling points below room temperature about 20C gases at room temp
- All others liquid at room temp
- Boiling point increases as number of carbon increases
Bond polarity
- Flourine most electronegative
- Iodine least
- electron pair in carbon- flourine bond will be dragged most toward halogen end
