Solubility 

  • Halogenoalkanes are very slightly soluble in water 
  • For them to disolve in water you have to break attractions between the molcules and break the H bonds between water molecules, both these cost energy 

Boiling point 

  • Some boiling points below room temperature about 20C gases at room temp 
  • All others liquid at room temp 
  • Boiling point increases as number of carbon increases 

Bond polarity 

  • Flourine most electronegative 
  • Iodine least 
  • electron pair in carbon- flourine bond will be dragged most toward halogen end 

Organic Mechanisms 

  • Involve curly arrows which are used to show movement of electron pairs in a reaction
