Halogens
- Elements in Group 7 of the Periodic Table (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine)
- They react with metals to produce halides (fluorides, chlorides, bromides, iodides)
- The reactivity of the halogens increases going up the group - fluorine is the most reactive non-metal
- Chlorine & iodine can be obtained from the compunds produced by the evaporation of sea water (mostly sodium chloride & potassium iodide), but this is no longer concidered to be an economical source of iodide
