Haemoglobin

Oxygen is carried around the body by Haemoglobin

  • Large protein with a quaternary structure
  • Four polypeptide chains
  • Each one has a haem group which contains an iron ion- gives red colour 
  • High affinity for oxygen-each molecule can carry 4 oxygen molecules
  • Oxygen joins to create oxyhaemoglobin- reversible reaction
