Carbon atoms form to make giant covalent structures.Carbon is also one of the minerals which is found in the earth's crust. 

Graphite has a differnet giant covalent structure.

Each carobn atom only form three covalent bonds.

This creates sheets of carbon atoms which are free to slide over each other.

This gives graphite
