Wellington as a PM

He became PM in 1828, after Lord Goderich's unsuccessful period. He was very authoritarian in hsi manner and could not hold a cabinet toghether in the same way that Liverpool had done so.

It was his cabinet reshuffle that brought the issue of Catholic emancipation to the fore, when he offered Vesey Fiztgerald (Protestant landowner) a seat in his cabinet leading the County Clare by-election.

Daniel O'Conell and the Catholic Association contested the seat and won, to the surprise of many in government.

Catholic Emanicpation

It created a huge rift in the Tory party that they would never really recover from. George IV's death led to William IV succession and subsequently a General Election. Wellington was left in a predicament the results favoured the Whigs and the Cannigite faction of the Tory party:
