Reasons for Failure 

  • Womens suffrage bill failed in 1909 due to a majority of MPs voting against it 
  • Liberals and conservatives divided over what type of vote it should be, private member bill not advancing past its second reading 
  • Herbet Asquith, PM also constantly blocked attempts at reform, attacked on a goalf course in scotland 
  • However some in government were sympathetic to the vote, bill carried by 35 votes to a second reading 
  • Also governments refusal only made women more detirmined, scaling up of militancy
