Geographical Information Systems:

Population and Cenus data

Seconary data- any data collected from another source.

Secondary analysis- is the re-analysis of this data.

Administrative records- includes records such as NHS, school records (publc service records)

Major Government Surveys- decennial census, general lifestyle survey.

Research data-  is data collected by other people/organisations.

WHY USE SECONDARY DATASETS?

Data as context- to be able to compare conxtauly against past and present for example.

Data as Comparison- used to compare old trends to current trends, highlighing whether patterns             have changed over time or not.

Data as the basis of analysis- major sources of research data i.e. the relatiosip between the geographical variaions in fear of crime and crime incidence.

Understand the previous research- this allows us to highlights the key themes and key players.

What are the Pro's and Cons?

PROS:

< seconary data is cheap/ often free

< clean and uncoded

< machine readable, often already formated.

CONS:

<not always appropriate

What do we do with census data?

< descrive the demography of an area

< explore the nature of relationships both demographically and social-economically.
