Diamond 

  • Made up of carbon
  • Bonds between each of the carbon atoms is very strong 

 Properties 

- Hard due to the strong forces between the carbon atoms 

- Transparent/ shiny  due to the arrangement of the carbon atoms 

- High melting/ boiling point due to strong forces between each of the bonded carbon atoms, a lot of energy is required to break them 

- No electrical conductivity as diamond is a covalent substance it has no free electrons so cant conduct electricity 

Uses 

- Drill bits, its hardness makes it very good to drill through tough objects 

- Jewellery, transparent/ shiny makes appearence attractive
