Germany: before, during and after Napoleon

  • by 1800, there were 23 million Germans living within 314 states
  • these states were loosely controlled by the Holy Roman Emperor (also known as the Austrian Emperor)
  • Austria and Prussia were both defeated by Napoleon (1805-6)
  • Napoleon rearranged the states to just 39
  • he also replaced the different laws with Code Napoleon (as he did with Italy)
  • ideas of liberty and equality became widespread throughout Germany
  • however, Prussia became angry at their defeat, the wanted to control Germany once again 
  • the war of Liberation 1813, saw Austria join in by declaring war on France
  • Napoleon was defeated and forced to…
