• In january 2003 there were riots in Alexandra, a black township outside johannesberg. The protests were aimed at the African national congress (ANC) government.
• Petrol bombs were thrown at the police who enfroced the eviction of families from their homes for non-payment of rent.
• The rioters were angry that after 9 years of ANC rules and the first black votes for black people in south Africa, wide disparities still existed between the (mainly white) wealthy population and the (mainly black) poor population.
