Rivers and floods

General terms:

Precipitation - any water from the sky

Interception - plants or buildings preventing water from reaching the ground

Transpiration - water released from plants

Overland flow - water flowing over land

Through flow - water flowing through soil

Groundwater flow - water flowing through bedrock

Infiltration - water going from surface to soil

Percolation - water filtering through the ground

Parts of a river:

River basin - precipitation falling in this will eventually end up in the main river

Source - where the river starts

Tributaries - smaller rivers joining onto large…
