Salt Marsh Formation

  • Form in low energy environments only
  • Depositional land forms help to shelter them (i.e. spits)
  • Requires a large sediment input (i.e. from rivers, sea)
  • Floculation of mud - when fresh water from the river mixes with the sea water, the negativly charged clay particles become neutralized, causeing them to clump together
  • Mud becomes heavier and more dense; it accumulates in shallow water because there is little energy
